Now I realise that I probably (definitely do) think about things more than required. For instance, I think about this website way more than I should, given that since I started checking hits, I’m getting about a hundred a day. One thing about this website that I consider is that perhaps I should post here when I make a YouTube video. Embed the video perhaps. But then, dear reader, those who already follow my YouTube channel via RSS will have to see the video twice. It is a conundrum to be sure.
With this in mind, I plan on putting a big old link to my YouTube video as a pinned post at the top of this page. See, that seems like a solution! I just wanted to pre-warn you all it was coming so that you don’t think I have gone mad when I post “I DO YOUTUBE TOO!”
Also, it occurs to me that perhaps I should give you a little update regarding my other ventures:
Windows Holiday
I am, indeed, still on a Windows holiday. I wanted to know how the other side live. People on YouTube have made vocal comments, saying that my channel has somehow betrayed them because I am making videos from Windows. I will invalidate no one’s viewpoint here but, think of this – If a Windows user came to Linux, hung out for a month and went back to the Windows-world telling everyone how shit it is on the other side, would that me a fair test? Would we say that this person understood Linux?
Would that person have actually learned anything in a few weeks?
NO, obviously not! I wouldn’t even do a distro review after a month of use. You have to use a thing to understand it. That’s what I’m doing. If that is a betrayal of my audience, then I really am very sorry you feel that way.
When will the Windows stop? (Steam Deck!)
When my Steam Deck arrives, I’ll be mostly making videos from my Steam Deck, about using Steam Deck as a full time PC. I’m looking forward to it a great deal. I have been planning this since the Steam Deck was announced. It’s going to be great! I have a little USB-C port-breakout dongle (which the box, incorrectly called a Dock) a 1080 monitor, mouse, keyboard, webcam and mic, all set up ready to go. The moment I plug in that Deck you will see a channel very focused on using it as a main PC!
But what’s with all the writing videos?
The channel has always been a very random collection of stuff. Its topic is “what Hex is interested in/doing right now” and always has been. It went from games, to coding, to window managers, to Free Software culture, to Gemini. It is just what I am interested in at that time. Given that I’m a nerd, this stuff usually overlaps with the viewers.
There have been many times where I have had comments saying “DUDE! Why are you making so many videos about GAMES? This is a Linux channel” then literally one video later someone else will say “Dude, I’m here for the games, why so much Linux shit?” – Both points are valid. Now, I get “why so many writing video?” and it’s valid too.
I wrote a book. It’s on Amazon (Hunters Garden) it’s linked on the side-bar of this very webpage. I am currently writing my third book. I write. A lot. Like, A LOT. Because of that, I am interested in writing, and I want to share that interest on YouTube. If you want me to stop, I can. But you will just get less videos. It would be better for you to only watch the ones you are interested in.
Usually, I think of the channel as a video diary of sorts. Others have projected more onto it than I think I have put there.
If you are going to be one of the people who write “you played Fortnite! Unsubscribed!” – okay. I do not make videos for those who don’t want to watch them, if you see too many videos you don’t want to watch, unsub, great. But don’t be angry at me for being me! I make videos for people who are interested in the stuff I’m doing. I mean, my most viewed videos are the “TrendyTalk” podcast and that’s not even a real show, it doesn’t even have topics!
Also, a lot of people really like my writing videos, a lot of people even like my writing.
Are you done yet?
Yes. Sorry, thanks for reading. Just wanted to get all that off my chest.
